Fertility preservation in child and adolescent males receiving gonadotoxic therapies
For young males facing gonadotoxic treatment, fertility preservation options are limited. For children and adolescents unable to produce sperm, testicular tissue cryopreservation is increasingly offered before gonadotoxic treatment as a potential future option to restore fertility.
However, there is no clear consensus on the best clinical practice for testicular tissue cryopreservation from the perspective of cryopreservation approach, tissue quality control, clinical assessment and follow-up for patients storing tissue. This Good Practice Recommendations paper aims to provide guidance on all aspects of fertility preservation in prepubertal boys and adolescent males in whom it is not possible to obtain sperm. It covers topics ranging from setting up a fertility preservation program and determining eligibility, to counselling, performing a testicular tissue biopsy and cryopreservation techniques.
The recommendations were open for stakeholder review between 9 December and 13 January 2025, and is now closed. The guideline group is currently updating the guideline based on the received comments.
