1. Sequence generation
• CFG group Cochrane reviews only include randomised controlled trials (RCTs)
• The order / sequence in which participants are allocated to trial groups must have a random component
• Avoids systematic differences between groups

LOW RISK
• Random number table
• Computer/calculator random number generator
• Minimisation (calculation to minimise imbalance in characteristics with the
next allocation – cautionary note)
• Simple methods: coin tossing, drawing lots
UNCLEAR RISK
• Stated as “random” only, with no description of how the sequence was created
HIGH RISK
• Non-random (including quasi-random) and therefore predictable e.g. patient or clinician preference, day of the week, result of a test etc.
If high risk then exclude
