Maternal Vaccination
against Pertussis (1)
Pertussis outbreaks continue to occur in the USA and elsewhere with infants at higher risk of severe illness, including hospitalization and death. The purpose of vaccination in pregnancy is to protect young infants who are more susceptible to severe illness and unable to be vaccinated.
MV aimed at :
• directlyprotectingtheinfantthroughpassiveantibodies transferred by the vaccinated mother.
• indirectly protecting the infant by decreasing the risk of acquiring B. pertussis from the infected mother if not vaccinated.
Maternal Vaccination against Pertussis (2)
• CDC recommends that all PW receive a single dose of TdaP in the late 2° or 3° trimester of each pregnancy (ideally between 26 and 36 w of gestation) in order to provide passive immunity to the infant.
