Maternal vaccination against Tetanus
• MaternalandneonatalTetanus(MNT)whichare largely associated with unclean delivery practices are common causes of maternal and neonatal mortality in developing countries (Africa, Southern and East Asia).
• MNTispreventablethrough:
– Vaccination of mother with Td – Hygienic birth practices
– Proper cord care
Elimination of MNT
• In 1989 the World Health Assembly launched the programme for elimination of neonatal Tetanus. In 1999 the goal is expanded to the elimination of maternal Tetanus.
• Followingtheimplementationofsuch programme, neonatal mortality rate had a dramatic decrease over time and many countries are now free of neonatal tetanus (<1 case x 1,000 live births).
