Cause of miscarriage
• One‐half of first‐trimester miscarriages due to aneuploidy or polyploidy • Most common is trisomy 16 (10‐12% miscarriages) (Niederberger et
al, 2018)
• A quarter of remaining euploid embryos are morphologically normal
• The other three‐quarters of miscarried euploids have abnormal growth or morphologically abnormal
• Single gene or polygenic perturbation
Cause of miscarriage
• Environmental factors
• Cigarette smoke exposure (Sharara et al, 1998)
• Endocrine disrupting chemicals (phthalates, parabens etc) (Karwacka et al, 2017)
• Obese and underweight women (Veleva et al, 2008)
• Maternal age (Abuelghar et al, 2014; Hipp et al, 2016)
• Previous miscarriage (Kupka et al, 2004)
• Tubal block, endometriosis
• Sperm DNA fragmentation (Miller et al, 2019)
