The centrosome is inherited from the sperm

During spermatogenesis, the distal centriole and centrosome proteins are diminished (centrosome reduction) Khire et al. 015

Centrosome number is critical
Event analogous to chromosome meiosis – normal number to be restored in zygote
Fertilization creates a special challenge for the control of centrosome number. Nature’s solution involves the destruction of the oocyte centrioles and the retention of reduced sperm centrioles.
Abnormalities in centrosome function/number responsible for cancers, birth defects and infertility.
Understanding centriole transmission is only becoming possible now that core molecules can be modified and tracked.
Implications for novel infertility diagnostics and treatments, and contraceptive approaches.
