The centrosome is inherited from the sperm
 Uniparental inheritance Theodor Boveri 1888
 During spermatogenesis, the distal centriole and centrosome proteins are diminished (centrosome reduction) Khire et al. 015
 Proximal centriole located in the mitochondrial sheath of the sperm’s connecting piece
Sutovsky and Schatten 2000
   Centrosome number is critical
 Event analogous to chromosome meiosis – normal number to be restored in zygote
 Fertilization creates a special challenge for the control of centrosome number. Nature’s solution involves the destruction of the oocyte centrioles and the retention of reduced sperm centrioles.
 Abnormalities in centrosome function/number responsible for cancers, birth defects and infertility.
 Understanding centriole transmission is only becoming possible now that core molecules can be modified and tracked.
 Implications for novel infertility diagnostics and treatments, and contraceptive approaches.
