Centrosomes
Organelles (microtubule cylinders) that act as MTOCs
Form the two poles of the mitotic spindle, which separates
chromosomes to daughter cells during cell division
Centrosomes contain
o a pair of centrioles
o Pericentriolar material (PCM)
(γ‐tubulin, pericentrin, NuMA)
Schatten & Stearns 2015
Centriole elimination before oocyte meiosis
In oocytes, centrioles are lost after pachytene stage
Drosophila, Caenorhabditis elegans, Xenopus, chicken,
rodents, cow, sheep, humans and all other mammals.
Unclear mechanism
Oocyte meiosis is acentrosomal. Female meiotic spindles are assembled in a centrosome‐independent manner
PCM proteins are not eliminated ‐ role in establishment and maintenance of the bipolar spindle apparatus
