Sperm preparation
‘Overall there is no clear evidence which technique is superior over the other in obtaining pregnancies’

Sperm preparation
Evidence for the Use of One technique Compared to Another
The choice of sperm preparation method depends on the characteristics of the semen sample.
• When sperm parameters such as concentration and motility are within the normal ranges direct swim‐up technique can be used.
• For significantly OAT samples, density gradient centrifugation is preferred since density gradient centrifugation leads to a higher recovery rate of motile sperm cells than the swim‐up technique.
• Density gradient centrifugation can be modified to address the issues of each individual specimen, and it is the method of choice for sperm preparation in the majority of ART and andrology laboratories.
