Clinical application of CASA / SFTs
Retrospective analysis of a 9‐year dataset (2006–2014), 1959 cycles. IVF used in 830 cycles, ICSI used in 1129 cycles (57.6%)
Prevalence of low / no fertilization:
Fertilization
Low
Failed
Differences in prevalence analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test
(MedCalc v13.1, www.medcalc.be)
The risk of failed or poor fertilization at IVF was no different to that for ICSI, and actually trended lower.
IVF ICSI

CASA for static image analysis
Improved image acquisition capabilities and computing power → more applications for CASA
Typically uses fixation and staining (attempting to use motile sperm requires the head, midpiece, and tail to be in the same focal plane)
Examples:
Morphology / morphometry
DNA fragmentation: sperm chromatin dispersion assay Vitality: e.g. Hamilton Thorne IDENT and VIADENT
ARIC test (Acrosome Reaction to Ionophore Challenge)
