microRNAs as serum markers of endometriosis – conclusions and challenges
Saare M et al. Biochim Biophys Acta. 2017 Sep;1863(9):2282-2292
–microRNAs are potentially promising biomarkers based on their function and on their technical properties
–Unified guidelines for sample collection (timing, storage), samples to be investigated (Serum vs Plasma) method of analysis and reference genes are needed to allow for comparisons between studies
–Data need to be generated on large and uniform patient collectives to allow for a solid estimation of their diagnostic value

Noninvasive Biomarkers for endometriosis- Summary and Conclusions
– Imaging techniques and analysis of blood and urine by ELISA, molecular biological techniques (transcriptomics, next-generation sequencing), mass- spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics are techniques employed in non invasive diagnostics of endometriosis.
– While individual studies look promising and provide suitable specificity and sensitivity, meta-analyses indicate that currently, no noninvasive technique can be recommended for replacing the gold standard laparoscopy in a clinical setting.
– More studies of high methodological quality are needed to perform meta- analyses that can lead to solid recommendations.
– Galectin-9, anti-endometrial antibodies/autoimmune markers (TMOD, TPM), sVCAM-1/sICAM-1, IL-6, glycodelin-A, acetylcarnitines and miRNAs (upon definition of standardized procedures) emerge as markers worth exploring in additional studies.
