COURSE 7
Sunday, 14 June I Room: Évora (FIL - Pavilion 3)
Genetic and genomic mechanisms and markers associated with gamete and embryo quality
Organised by the Special Interest Group Reproductive Genetics
COURSE COORDINATORS: Ursula Eichenlaub-Ritter (Germany), Claudia Spits (Belgium), Joyce Harper (United Kingdom), Jan Traeger-Synodinos (Greece)
COURSE TYPE: Advanced
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The advances in analysis of polar bodies, single blastomeres, sperm and cells in molecular genetics and PGS, and the findings on distinct expression patterns in early development, together with the identification of genes contributing to subfertility, mitochondrial disease and ageing have increased our knowledge on mechanisms that contribute to reduction in germ cell and embryo quality, reduced development potential and genetically transmitted risk factors and human disease. The workshop is designed to provide an updated overview of these findings with special reference to germ cell and embryo quality and developmental potential and provides a platform for discussions on the relevance of this for treating patients in assisted reproduction.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Scientists, embryologists and medics, PGD specialists and geneticists
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: The rapid developments in molecular genetics demand to inform clinicians, embryologists, geneticists and all involved in ART on recent findings and to provide an overview on the basic cellular mechanisms, background knowledge and role of the genetic constitution on germ cell and embryo quality, fertility in male and female, and on genes in reduced fertility and embryo quality for optimizing decision making, treatment and counselling. The course will provide this overview in a series of lectures by experts in the field and by offering a platform for discussions and interactions between participants and faculty.
