Future research
• Assess effect of timing of miscarriage on subsequent cycle outcomes, as differing aetiologies for early and late pregnancy losses may affect future chances of live birth
• Adjustment for confounders e.g. history of previous miscarriage, BMI, smoking, ovarian reserve
Summary
• Risk of miscarriage following IVF is similar to risk of miscarriage following natural conception
• Risk factors are smoking, obesity, maternal age, previous miscarriage, tubal blockage, endometriosis
• Women who miscarry following ET in the first complete cycle of IVF have a higher chance of live birth over subsequent complete cycles than women who do not get pregnant at all over the first complete cycle of IVF (but lower than women who had a live birth following ET in first complete cycle)
