Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Describe the problems with using CASA for clinical semen analysis
2. Differentiate between semen analysis and sperm function tests
3. List the current and potential research and clinical applications of CASA

CASA from the beginning
 CASA grew out of earlier methods of trajectory analysis:  timed exposure photomicrography (Janick and MacLeod, 1970)  multiple exposure photomicrography (Makler, 1978)
 microcinematography (David et al, 1981)
 videomicrography (Katz and Overstreet, 1981)
 The common aim was to quantify aspects of sperm motility
(kinematics) related to fertility
Curvilinear velocity (VCL μm/s) Average path velocity (VAP μm/s) Straight line velocity (VSL μm/s)
“Risers”: (longest riser × 2) = ALHmax amplitude of lateral head displacement (μm) for the track
