COURSE 13
Sunday, 14 June I Room: Campolide + Olivais (Hotel Tivoli Oriente) How to provide infertility care for the aging couple
Organised by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine
COURSE COORDINATORS: Rebecca Z. Sokol (USA) COURSE TYPE: Advance
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Fertility declines in humans with age, though more rapidly in females than in males. As increasing numbers of men and women defer their family building, reproductive health professionals are faced with severe challenges in helping patients achieve pregnancy. Causes of age-related infertility include inadequate production of reproductive hormones, inadequate responsiveness to hormones, poor oocyte and sperm quality, and reproductive disease. The goal of this course for reproductive health professionals who care for infertility patients is to raise the level of competence in diagnosing the causes of infertility in aging patients and develop appropriate courses of treatment.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Reproductive health professionals, including physicians, nurses, laboratory scientists and mental health professionals who care for infertility patients.
EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES: Responses of attendees at the 2011, 2012 and 2013 ASRM Annual Meetings to pre-meeting clinical case challenge questions indicated that less than 70% of attendees answering
were able to effectively treat infertile couples of advanced reproductive age. The ASRM CME Committee reviewed the responses to the challenge questions and determined that there was a gap in physician competence in this area and, thus, a need for continuing education for reproductive health professionals. The proposed course is intended to provide practical, up-to-date guidance to advance the practice of infertility care for older patients.
