ASRM Embryo Transfer Standard Protocol
6. Place the warmed speculum. Flush or cleanse cervix/vagina with cotton swab or gauze sponge using media or saline (Common Practice).
• There is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against cleansing of the cervix prior to embryo transfer (grade C). However, if performed, there is fair evidence based on a single RCT to recommend saline over Betadine (Grade B).
ASRM Embryo Transfer Standard Protocol
7. Remove mucus from endocervical canal (Systematic Review and Common Practice).
• Based on one RCT, there is fair evidence that removing mucus improves pregnancy rates (Grade B).
• There is fair evidence that the presence of mucus on the catheter after transfer does not adversely affect outcomes (Grade B).
• Given mixed results of studies, there is insufficient evidence to conclusively state that blood on the catheter after the transfer does or does not adversely affect outcomes.
