• Research on same‐sex parent families began the mid‐1970s
• Focused entirely on lesbian mother families
• Arose from children custody disputes involving a lesbian mother following divorce
• At that time, most lost custody of their children on the grounds that it was not in a child’s best interests to be raised by a lesbian mother
