Learning Objectives (page 1 of 2)
• The session provides an opportunity to reflect on and refine our
thoughts about some ethical questions raised by surrogacy.
• This is a huge and complex topic and so the list of ethical
questions raised will not be exhaustive.
• This session is about ethical issues, not clinical, legal, or
sociological ones (although these may be mentioned in passing).
• As far as possible, I will try to remain neutral with respect to different abstract ethical theories, although it is hard to discuss human reproduction without making some assumptions.
Learning Objectives (page 2 of 2)
• In what ways has surrogacy (especially but not exclusively paid surrogacy) generated concerns about (a) consent and voluntariness and (b) exploitation?
• How valid are these concerns in the context of
– Unpaid ‘altruistic’ surrogacy?
– Paid ‘commercial’ surrogacy?
• What can we do to ensure that surrogacy is as non‐exploitative as possible, and that the quality of consent from all parties is as high as possible?
