Experiences of being a surrogate mother
• Surrogate mothers generally report being satisfied with their experiences
• The rate of immediate postpartum depression 0 - 20 %
• Problems with handing over the child are rare (2 - 6 %)
• It has been suggested that the surrogate mother may not view the child she is carrying as her child, thereby facilitating the relinguishment
– Not always clear whether the child was the result of traditional or gestational surrogacy

• Comparison of 50 Indian surrogates with 69 expectant mothers during the 4th‐9th month of pregnancy and 4–6 months after the birth of the baby
• Surrogates had higher levels of depression compared to the comparison group of mothers, during pregnancy and post‐ birth (P < 0.02)
• Low social support during pregnancy, hiding surrogacy and criticism from others were predictive of higher depression in surrogates post‐birth (P < 0.05)
• No associations between greater prenatal bonding and greater psychological distress during pregnancy or after relinquishment
