In vitro culture of human testis tissue using a classical organ culture method
Organ cultures (classic method) have been successfully used to culture human fetal, prepubertal and adult testis to study the effects of endocrine disruptors (BPA, Phthalates) and analgesics upon Leydig cell function and germ cell number. Tissue fragments have been cultured mostly for short period of times.
Advantage: useful tool to test the gonadoxicity of substances
Limitation: the gradual loss of germ cells, mostly meiotic and postmeiotic cells
In vitro culture of human testis tissue using the hanging drop model
Advantages: small amount of culture medium is required; useful tool for testing the effects of biological agents on testis
Limitation: in vitro culture and germ cell maintenance only for short times
