Learning objectives
• DNA damage occurs endogenously in oocytes and embryos.
• There are different types of DNA damage.
• Programmed double-strand break formation in oocytes & sperm, which gives rise to ‘recombination’.
• Chromosome recombination mediates their accurate segregation at meiosis I in gametes.
• Errors in chromosome segregation lead to aneuploidy (extra or missing chromosomes).
• DNA repair genes regulate ovarian reserve (onset of menopause; POI)
• DNA damage is detrimental in embryos (no programmed induction of damage).
• DNA damage and chromosome instability in embryos restrict their developmental potential.
