Some considerations
• Different methods to evaluate sDF give variable and incomparable results (average sDF values in different studies vary extensively depending on the method of evaluation, other than patients’ selection, female factor)
• There is no consensus on which is the “gold standard” method
• Lack of standardization of these methods with the exception of
SCSA
• Several cutoffs (depending on the study, method, patients selection etc)
• Indirect methods (SCSA or SCD) evaluate chromatin susceptibility to damage
• Direct methods (Comet, TUNEL) evaluate the real damage (single and double DNA strand breaks)
• Which of these assays differentiate clinically important damage from unsignificant damage? Results of metanalyses where studies have been grouped according to the method
